The article talks about the topic of depression. It is sometimes hard to pin point whether we, ourselves are depressed. It is a very informative article on detecting signs of the mental illness. Some of the questions you need to ask yourself are how frequently am I depressed, how severe is it and how long does the depression lasts. 

Depression does not only affect your emotions but it also affects many other aspects of a human being such as your behavior/attitude and your physical health. Common emotional symptoms are irritability, pessimism, guilt, anxiety, emptiness, suicidal thinking, and a sense of hopelessness/worthlessness. Common behavioral symptoms are diminished interest and enjoyment of activities you use to enjoy, difficulty in concentration, having a hard time making decisions and neglecting responsibilities including personal appearance for example. Lastly, the common physical symptoms are excess or deprivation of sleep and eating, feeling tired and frequent pain such as headaches. 

There can be many causes of why an individual is depressed. Possible contributing factors are your environment, interpersonal relationships, physical, medical and biological problems, diet and exercise, thought patterns of a pessimistic nature, spiritual, existential and philosophical dilemmas. 

Before seeking help, there are things you can try to do to overcome depression. Start by developing a healthier and balanced diet. Start exercising regularly. Develop a method to manage your time and stress. Keep track of how your feeling and try find a support system (especially a support system that will not be prone to reacting to stigma). 

If depression persists, seek professional help. For many, Psychotherapy counseling is enough but sometimes professionals will combine that with anti-depressant medication so that the individual can function better.

In my opinion, this is a great article for people who are not very familiar with depression. It explains what you have to look for to know if you are suffering from depression. It also explains in concise bullet form, the symptoms which fit the DSM IV criteria of depressive disorder. Although it doesn't talk about professional treatment, it explains important aspects in your life that should be changed and is very informative in regards to the symptoms and characteristics of depression.
