This seems to be a very good project. The workers' conditions in countries like Bangladesh are terrible. Their bosses give little to no regard to their well-being. Most of the clothes that we buy come from this type of environment, creating awareness for this issue is really important. One major factor in western society contributes to this issue: affluenza. It is a contagious and negative condition transmitted socially. This condition makes people always crave more material goods and creates waste or cheap labour in other countries as it is the case here. A societal shift would be necessary: if people put less importance on goods like clothes, there will be less demand for enormous and cheap quantities of clothing, therefore reducing the markets of cheap labour.

I agree that homelessness is a pervasive issue. If we consider the homeless people's happiness, it must be very hard for them to live in a world where they lack privacy and they can feel the eyes of everyone on them. Their idea of themselves could affect their own happiness. Their looking-glass self, or the way they see themselves through the eyes of other people can contribute to self concept. They imagine how they appear to others, which is probably a negative image, then they imagine how others might judge them and they reflect in order to develop some self-feeling.

This is a great project for a school that promotes sustainable happiness. Aestetically pleasing aspects can be a form of bodily pleasure; it is a simple pleasure that we can appreciate. This can create a positive emotion (of course this is subjective) and influence thoughts in a positive way.

It would be totally wrong to erase our bad history because it permits us to analyze the full portrait of the history even if it is shameful. Furthermore, our past influences our future in the sense that we can take voluntary control not to repeat our mistakes and use this past to learn forgiveness in order to be more optimistic.

The real objective is for people to try outdoor activities such as running or walking in the woods in order to solve the problem you are talking about. It also goes beyond the senses because exercise is proven to release dopamine which is a neurotransmitter responsible for pleasure. Thus, someone taking this kind of new habits would cause both bodily and higher pleasure and would lead to positive emotions. Furthermore, a certain activity could become this person’s passion and they would experience flow which is a psychological state that accompanies highly engaging activities. In sum, it would kill two birds with one stone.

I completely agree with you. Cars contribute to pollution which leads to climate change and traffic is something that makes many of us angry because we are always running out of time. The solution that you propose will have a long-term impact on people’s happiness because it involves voluntary control. Indeed, people will be happier by deciding to take public transportation instead of being stuck in traffic and frustrated.
People own more cars than they actually need. Why is that? The answer is materialism. When people are bored of their old car, they buy a new one; therefore, your advertising banner may also contribute to a change regarding materialism which generates ecological costs such as pollution.

Charles, your project is very interesting, thank you for sharing it! Your idea to install recycling facilities for electronic waste at your school is very brilliant! If you don't mind, I would like to add a few more thoughts to this whole e-waste thing: I think that there is not enough awareness about the consequences of e-waste right now. We should put some efforts into spreading the information to the population. I cannot believe that people change their 800$ cellphone as soon as a newer model comes out. This blows my mind every single time! It is not only e-waste, but also a big money waste! In another hand, giants like Apple and Samsung also do major updates on their system so that your cellphone get really slow once the update is installed. JUST DON'T DO THE UPDATES! That's the best way to keep your phone responsive and fast! People needs to be smarter and people needs to be more educated on the consequences of changing their electronic devices just for the luxury of getting the newest gadget. I hope my thoughts will ring a bell to some of you and that awareness will be considered to decrease e-wasted in the future!

  • Sustainable Happiness F17

As wealth has increased, happiness has stagnated. As with wealth, happiness is increasingly unequally distributed around the world. As we consume more, we are causing the Earth's sixth mass extinction. Can Sustainable Happiness Fall 2017 save the planet? Probably not, but hopefully it...
