I recently read an article of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) about an advancement in biottchnology, named: New Artificial Chromosomes Set Stage for First Complex Synthetic Genome, written by Meagan Phelan, on March 9 2017. To summarize, it informs us that scientists of the Synthetic Yeast Genome Project (Sc2.0) are near to their goal to create a full synthetic yeast genome. In fact, they had already constructed six synthetics yeast chromosomes that represent more than one-third of yeast's entire genome. It says that in the next two years, they would be able to create all the sixteen chromosomes of the yeast genome. Create this first synthetic eukaryotic organism mean a lot. First, they will possibly create yeasts that could product better version of commodities it already delivers, including new antibiotics or more eco-friendly bio fuels. But it is not just about yeast, that will also help scientists to understand more about the genetic itself. Understands things such as the maximum number of nonessential genes that can be deleted in an organism without a catastrophic impact or the origins of certain human diseases. This big project is supported by many labs around the world (Britain, China, Australia and Singapore). The leaders of this project have good hope for the future advancement.
As a person that will probably go study in biotechnology engineering, this article is very near of my field of interest. Creating synthetics organism will be a big step for humanity, it will be like creating life and this will truly change our perception of it. Just by reading this, we say to ourselves: « How far can science go?» In just two years it will probably be possible to create a fully synthetic yeast genome, maybe one day it will be the human genome that scientists will create. Who knows? About yeast, it says that it could help to find the origins of some diseases and for me, help medicine is a very important goal of science. In addition, it is interesting to see how this project is big. In the article, it says that this project was too big for just one lab, so they made a collaboration with labs around the globe. This collaboration make us see another good side of science, that different peoples from different places can work together for the sake of progress.
