About me:

I’m Billy Bastien, a business student and restaurant waiter at times. As a proud Gaspesian I value family, community, and contribution. I believe everyone has something unique they can give to our society. My values probably explain why i’m so passionate of the hospitality industry. I’ve decided over the years to combine my two passions, hospitality and business, and call it a plan. I will pursue my studies in hospitality management at university and my ambitions are to have my own restaurants and hotels, but also to give the community back what it gave me. Subjects of concern for me are corporate social responsibility, climate change, and regional development. I love sea kayaking, fashion, and enjoying great food/wine with great people. So what are we reading/writing about next ?

Throughout the semester, most of my research as been directed towards education. This research paper with be analyzing other country’s system and our system and compare them to see what works better and what doesn’t, the goal being to find a way to make school a place where people want to be rather than being a somewhat forced thing. Instead of delving deep into statistics of one way to do it, I will go through a more general idea and talk about 3 issues and ways of fixing them.

This paper demonstrates how it is possible for social entrepreneurship to play a key role in rural development. It draws links between social entrepreneurs, their work, their role in sustainable development, and how it relates to rural development. My findings suggest that social entrepreneurship can be achieved if we consider catering to the basic needs of individuals in the society first. In addition, we must find a development model that works today and does not impede, but rather create, better opportunities for tomorrow.

Quebec’s poorest region is on the edge of growing rich. But why is the Gaspe not rich yet? Its habitants fear the unknown; will oil extraction transform their region that’s renowned for being a natural paradise. Certain sites are already being used for production, while others still serve for exploration purposes. These sites aren’t located along the coast, though there are exceptions, but rather in the hinterlands where the population don’t hear nor see what is going on. Pollution is still happening despite being invisible claim environmentalists.

Social isolation has been proven to play a negative role for elders in terms of physical, cognitive and most importantly emotional health. Social supports play an important role in the lives of older adults, as their lives change many loose spouses and friends that have always been there, leaving many with no social activity. There are many community based organizations for older adults that provide a healthy social environment for those who are socially isolated.

The population's migration towards urban centers from rural regions is becoming more and more frequent in Canada and in the United States and has even become a growing issue for these two North American countries. Indeed, demographic disparities have become a potential threat to economic, social and political aspects of the areas discussed and create problems for the population affected.
