Does new power benefit or harm individuals security?

An article written in the NY Times on October 31, 2017, by Corey Kilgannon and Joseph Goldstein talks about Sayfullo Saipov, the suspect in the New York Terror Attack that happened last Tuesday, October 24, 2017. Saipov was driving a rented truck and ran over pedestrians walking on a bike path along the Hudson River leaving eight people dead and 11 injured. He had been on “the radar of federal authorities during an investigation” but the officials did not have enough evidence and it “was unclear whether Saipov was connected with that investigation”.

Saipov used to work with Uber and Lyft which are considered to be “new power” companies. New power values an “open source collaboration” meaning that many work together in order to form something instead of just one person having all the authority; in other words, new power depends on the participation of the community. With Uber and Lyft, people use technology, a new product, to work on their own for a specific company in which they choose when and where they would like to work. However, there are some things to take into consideration before working for Uber and Lyft. One of these being that in order to work for one of these company’s, candidates have to pass a background check. Saipov passed both background checks for Uber and Lyft although he had some incidents with the authorities. This background check failed to reveal that Saipov also had serious vehicle violations in another state which makes the reader question the company as the information might have been ignored.

My question to this is are companies using their power to the best of their abilities in ensuring others safety or are they thinking about their own benefits? Do we believe so much in technology and new power that we do not see the potential harm it may cause? What can be improved in this situation is the background checks from these companies to guarantee well-being. New power companies such as Uber and Lyft oversee the importance of a thorough background check in order to ensure the safety of their customers around the work. It is convenient for them not to limit as the demand for drivers has increased drastically over the last few years due to the expansion of this modern method of transportation. The growth of these companies may play a role in safety as the bigger they get, the harder it is to keep track of every employee and every situation.

There have been many technological advancements which in this case has created a new word and concept such as new power. We still do not know how to use all of what we were given but we need to learn in order to progress.
