Libertarian Paternalism Is Not an (Ethical) Oxymoron

In 2003, economist Richard H. Thaler and lawyer Cass R. Sunstein co-wrote a seminal paper called Libertarian Paternalism Is Not an Oxymoron. It was this paper that led to the creation of the very first Behavioural Insights Team in the United Kingdom, or what they would later call the ‘nudge unit’. This team utilizes behavioural science to maximize public programs cost-efficiency and enrolment, and hope to help people make better and healthier choices. An example of this would be in taking advantage of social norms to get people to pay their taxes.

Killing Me Softly With Your Virtues

Euthanasia is one of the most controversial moral dilemmas in medical science. It is the act of deliberately ending someone’s life, who is severely ill and in great suffering, with their consent. Other terms used to describe this act are assisted suicide or mercy killing. There is a lot of debate surrounding this issue, some argue that no individual should help another to commit suicide under any circumstance and that this act devalues human life.

It is time to bring this to table: Prostitution industry should be legal.

  Nowadays, many developed countries realized the importance of prostitution industry make the prostitution business legally already. Some countries which depend on the tourist industry even use prostitution industry as a major economic income. However, not all the countries can tolerate the existence of prostitute. In some conservative countries such like China, the governments are still strictly cracked down the prostitution industry. However, their ways of doing thing does not help to stop this industry at all.

Last week, a horrible shooting happened at a Mosque, but sadly false information had been circulated that one of the suspects was a Muslim. This event alarmed everyone and that is why legislators would like to ban fake news. However, one of the laws do not forbid sharing false information unless it destroys someone's reputation as proclaimed by the lawyer Peter Jacobsen. Also, he said that banning fake news would interfere with the "freedom of speech".

On January 29, Liam Stack wrote an article called “Trump’s Executive Order on Immigration: What We Know and What We Don’t” for the New York Times. In it, he talks about the consequences of President Trump’s newest executing order affecting the immigration system such as banning residents from Iraq, Syria, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan and Yemen for 90 days from entering the country, suspending all refugee admissions for 120 days and Syrian refugees will not be allowed in the United States for an indefinite period. Around the world, the consequences could be felt.
