Whether you are a high school student or an adult with a career, volunteering is a rewarding experience that has the potential to have an impact. It is with small actions that people make a difference. If you want to participate in advancing women’s rights and eliminating extreme poverty, the organization Crossroads International offers great volunteer opportunities according to your age and experience. Their goal is to “create a more equitable and sustainable world by engaging and strengthening individuals, organizations and communities through mutual learning, solidarity and collective action”.

At the moment, the organization focuses on advancing women’s rights and combating extreme poverty in the following countries: Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Togo, Swaziland and Bolivia. People can volunteer overseas in one of these countries, as the organization will assign you to a country and project based on immediate needs. For students, the organization offers placements as part of the Québec Sans Frontières program. This program is open to any Quebecer ages 18 to 35 to volunteer in any of the countries mentioned above. For a student, this is an ideal volunteer opportunity as it takes place during the summer. Secondly, there is also the Volunteer Cooperation Program which offers long-term placements in the countries in need, and the volunteers must be 19 years old or older to participate. The projects are similar to the Québec Sans Frontières projects, but are elaborated on a longer period of time.

If you do not have the time or money to volunteer overseas, the organization is always looking for volunteers online. This program has a more flexible agenda and involves various tasks, such as fundraising, sensitization to the cause of Crossroads International and the organization of certain events. This is the perfect volunteering option if you are not comfortable or have the resources to go overseas.

Crossroads International has two offices in Canada: One in Toronto, and one in Montreal. To get in touch with the Montreal office, which would be the most efficient way to get complementary information about the volunteering opportunities if you live around the Montreal area, you can e-mail quebec@cintl.org, or call 514 528-5363.
