Effect of Media on Teen Girls Today

Nowadays media is everywhere! At home, at school, at work and even on the streets there is some sort of media flashing at you. However, this was not always the case. Media today "teaches" us how to live and behave socially and what is to be expected of us. Teenage girls are most susceptible to this due to high levels of social pressure incited by the media. Advertisements, fictional TV series, Hollywood movies and even cartoon movies all portray the perfect woman and girls take this very personally and it has some very consequences.
In a brief conversation with my mother, she explained to me that media didn't have such a huge impact on their lives as kids as it does today. She had never heard of the concept of self-mutilation due to depression. This is unfortunately a very serious problem that a lot of teenage girls face all around the world. They see what the perfect woman should be on television and then compare it to themselves and are not happy with what they see. A lot of teenage girls as young as the age of 13 go through severe depression problems and suffer from eating disorders, self-mutilation and often contemplate suicide. Back in the days these problems were unheard of simply because media wasn't everywhere and we weren’t constantly reminded that we weren't perfect.
This only shows that media nowadays has taken too much of an important role in the lives of teenage girls and it is affecting them in the worst way possible! What you see on television is nothing but deception in order to make money and attract the younger population to buy the advertised products. Be who you want to be.
