Discrimination, Racial Inequality

The article “Racism on the Rise in Australia: migrants report cultural shift” by Cosima Marriner in the Sidney Morning from April 6, 2014 explains the current situation of racism in Sydney. Racism is becoming very common is Australia, from being harassed on public transport, not getting a job interview to regularly being asked about your origin and when did you move here? A survey done by the Scanlon Foundation has shown that the percentage of discrimination against skin color has increased by 7 percent since 2012. Experts believe that the growth of racism has a relation with the economic concern. Things did not get better when George Brandis, an Attorney General, said, “people do have a right to be a bigot”. By saying this he encourage part of the Australian population that felt uncomfortable to share their discrimination. The Social Cohesion survey has established that certain groups are considered a greater racial discrimination target. Migrants are saying that the worst thing of Australia is the racial discrimination found within its society.

It is well shown in the article that racism has become a rising issue in Australia. It is in a situation like the one with George Brandis that racism can be encourage. People do not realize the power of words and that statement like this can inspire discrimination. Racist ideologies are easily shared socially with realizing. People use racism as a way to make sense of the world, which is absorb. Like is was mention in the article written by Cosima Marriner, the racism and discrimination found in Australia was strongly influenced by the unstable economy. One of the strength of the article that helped build up her arguments was the usage of statics and real life situation. I cannot believe that the percentage of discrimination found in Australia increased by seven percent between the year 2012 and 2014 (Cosima Marriner, 2014). We are supposed to live in a world of equality and respect but these statics are proving otherwise. People need to be educated about the similarity between people with different skin colors and realize that we are all the same and no discrimination should be done.

I agree with you, when you state that people shoud be educated about other cultures and to learn that you can not judge someone because of his origins. You also made a good point, aboout the correlation between racism and the unstable economy and that descimination in Australia increases by 7 percent between 2012 to 2014. In addition, you can also see in the Helena smith`s article, "SS songs and antisemitism: the week Golden Dawn turned openly Nazi"(http://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/jun/07/greece-golden-dawn-fascism-...), that unstable economy also leads in neo nazi political party. as examle, the Greek party called Golden dawned, was becoming popular. When can see a correlation with the really unstable Greek`s economy and the fact that people tends to vote for this kind of party, know as racism. as the Hitler`s party, golden dawned is against jews and other minorities.
