Knowledge & Media

About this class

All of us engage with the media in one way or another. Whether we spend several hours a day on-line, watch movies or television shows, or even limit ourselves to the occasional read of a newspaper or magazine, we easily get overloaded with messages telling us how to look, act, think and feel.

Knowing how to deal with this pervasive information is essential for sane navigation of the media dominated world. So how can we use media so that it makes us empowered and engaged participants rather than complacent and passive receivers? How can we use it to improve rather erode our individual and cultural capacities? To begin answering these questions, we will reflect upon the concept of “knowledge” and explore the ways in which the media affects our ability to “know” our selves, the world, and the relationship between the two. Through lectures, videos, readings, investigations, discussions, networking and blogging, we will learn how to use the media intelligently and mindfully. And, in doing so, we will hopefully contribute to the evolution and enrichment of our personal and collective knowledge.

In our modern daily life, people are consumed by their life circle, working all week, the weekend comes, they try to relax and then it starts again. There is barely any time to work on ourselves. The stress is overwhelming us. Our brain, at some point, needs to be fed and to be unrestrained. Namely, we need the brain to be active. In 2011, according to Statistics Canada, there are 23.6% of young people aged from 15 years old and older who admitted that most of the days they feel a bit stressful.  In this blog, I will explore the benefits of exercising your body on the brain.

Dictatorships ruled over several countries during the 20th century.  From Stalinist-Russia, to Nazi-Germany and Pinochet’s Chile all had repressive leaders that crushed and abused the rights of their civilian.  With the help of the United-States of America, Pinochet’s military regime overthrew Salvador Allende’s “Popular Unity coalition”, which was democratically elected by the people.  Allende was a man beloved by his people.  He was a left-wing politician that wanted the best for his people.

ACADEMIC BLOGPOSTPHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND DEPRESSIONPhysical activity is often promoted as a natural treatment for depression. Studies are now trying to prove this fact but actually the results do not go as they would. One study says that physical activity is a good treatment even if the patient is not doing a lot of movement but at the opposite, the other study shows that physical activity improves the psychological risk factor and the depression symptoms.

In fact, over 25 states of America is acknowledging LGBT rights as well as their marriage. Of course when comes marriage normally comes family and the real question is : are children that comes from a gay-couple family any different from any other kids that comes from straight-couple family ?

On the other side, it is the same thing for women who enjoy playing a “men sport”. In these articles I learned a lot about gender stereotypes in the world of sports. What is interesting is that many examples and lived experiences are given.

Gas, ethanol, petrol, Diesel, are all different kind of fuel that can be put into our cars, but what is the difference between them? One major difference that ethanol has, is that it is based on corn and other material that sugar can be taken out of. Its particularity is that scientist can almost find cellulosic ethanol in every material. The mainly ingredients to create ethanol is the fermentation of sugar. Basically, the creation of ethanol can be based on wood or even “chips of wood” (Kevin, Bullis, p1).

Concussion is affecting too much athletes. Voluntary or not, a hit to the head can have several consequences on a life. In hockey, football, soccer, boxing, football, swimming, gymnastic and others sports, there is always a danger to caught a concussion. Even at house or anywhere. The issue is that most of the people do not know the several consequences of a concussion, and especially the time they have to rest. Generally, a “normal” concussion takes ten days to get off. Athletes get the spirit of competition and they want to come back as fast as possible; consult a doctor before.

The subject is compelling because I myself was in a student board in high school and the issue came up many times. Students would claim that cellphones had many useful applications that could be used in class. They also said that in case of emergencies it was important to have a cellphone to call 9-1-1 or communicate with family and etc. On the other hand, the school would claim that often students could use their cellphones as a mean to intimidation (social networks, pictures, videos, messages and etc.) and that is was also a tool for cheating. The school also believed that cellphones are a source of distraction to the students with its games and music. It was a very controversial subject but the school concluded it was ok for the students to have the cellphones in their lockers, but not on their own person. Cellphones were allowed at school after or before class hours, but confiscated if we were to be seen with it. Being a student, my perspective is quite valuable on the matter. Having heard both sides though is a real eye-opener to. I believe that the school’s claim are very important to consider. Embarrassing pictures of teenagers are sent everyday through mobile devices. Teachers are often taken in video when they go into and outburst which is then sent from person to person. Cellphones are also a huge cheating threat considering pictures can be taken of exam answers and even text messages during exams.
Although I do not believe having the cellphone in our pockets is wrong. The use itself is the problem. Saying we use are cellphones up to 5 times a day doesn’t look like an argument itself. We don’t need to use our cellphones every day, in fact, I know people who do not own cellphones and these people are better off without it. Claiming that cellphones have an educational use is easy and true, but now schools are equipped with computers and IPads that use safe networking to improve the learning environment. Computers are a much more practical and serious way to study and work then cellphones are, in my opinion. Also, believing that cellphone abuse is slim is maybe overlooking the danger. The article I read mainly speaks about the abuse of cellphones by students being a danger to themselves and the teachers. While doing your research, consider the many dangers of cellphones use no matter the age, even at the Champlain now there are “Spotted” pages with hateful messages sent by cellphones and these messages are often anonymous. Therefore, I believe cellphone use should be prohibited from class.

I think this issue of which cellphones is better than the other is an interesting issue, but it might need a little work on what would be your arguments, since I do not see what could be argued. Your conclusion and explanation could need some improvement since you are opening into another complete subject at the end talking about blackberry. How is this related? I would maybe think about adding it into the arguments, probably saying that these two brands are the top of technology and explain how they managed to get there. I think you brought up an interesting fact in saying “Why people want the phone and why they are in demand compared to other phones”, this is an argument that would need some more development but it is a good start.
In my sense I feel this essay does not corresponds to my interest, it would be the same as talking about which video game is better than the other. In fact if you would talk about why we think this brand is better or why people always want the more technological thing then it would maybe grab more my attention. Because to me, when you talk about how fast the processor is going, and how many application, or which application can be installed ,or how long the battery last, it is more like boring facts than an interesting issue. My perspective on your subject would probably cover the study of the generation on cellphone, than which cellphone is better. I have this perspective because, as a teenager, we do not see how affected we are by these commercial saying this cellphone is better and it offers better application, etc., but in this sense I was the first to buy into. So this is why I think I might prefer learning why instead of getting right into what company wants. You did approach this fact but you simply mentioned it. This way could probably be more explore. An article on Wise Geek explains how consumers work with companies and brand and they explain why they would rather choose a company than another (http://www.wisegeek.com/what-is-the-consumer-theory.htm ).They explain the humans logical thinking when they are up to consume. It could be interesting fact to had in your essay, but I do not know all your argument, so it is hard for me to know if it is related or not.

I found interesting that you wrote on the transparency in Canadian government because it is a subject that we don’t often hear about. I would like to read your essay to learn more about it, because I don’t really know much about the subject. I agree with you on the fact that transparency can be appealing but can also lead to bad things. You also talked about the transparency in other countries which can also be relevant as if we talk about the government as a whole and how it works in other countries. Even if I found it interesting, I cannot say that I understand everything you wrote, because there are no comparison between the good side and the bad side, as you were saying in your thesis statement. You wrote examples of the bad side of it which were good examples we understand why the transparency can have a bad side.

As someone who don’t know much about the subject, it is hard to give my opinion on it. By classifying that everyone think that transparency in Canadian government is good. I can enter myself in that group of person. By generalizing this idea, we don’t know what you want to mean by the good side because there are no evidence of what you know on what is the good side of the transparency in Canadian government. You do not provide examples, so I don’t know where to classify myself so I decided to go with the majority. I think that transparency in Canadian government is good. But I also think that we class ourselves in the two sides there are good and bad consequences to both of the sides. That is why I’m confuse maybe you can say that there is a bad side by do not compare the two sides. At the end you are saying that maybe we should not know about something because our information can be false. I think it is important to know about information from the government maybe it can be not the good information but at least we know a little bit where we situate ourselves politically talking. If this is the good side of the transparency as my own definition I class myself as one who think that transparency is good and that we need it in Canadian government.

Even though I was forced to read your Abstract essay, I find that your topic is very interesting and brings excellent arguments. The reason why is due to the fact it is relevant to our age type, were always all busy working hard at school, working for money and at the same time trying to get a social life with family and friends. With all this going on in our lives we lack time to sleep, eat healthy and stay physically active. The message you want to show the readers is strong and could help several of us on thinking about helping our brain strengthen. On top of all of this you have a good use of vocabulary and I believe that all 3 of your premise are strong. You can maybe add a little more to your third premise, on how physical activity helps strengthen the brain. This would make your essay even stronger. Here a reference that talks about how physical activity help strengthen the brain: http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/09/28/how-exercise-can-strengthen-the...
Before coming to college, I was the type of guy to never get enough sleep and it had tremendous effect on my everyday life. I was always tired and couldn’t concentrate in school. I ate good food and played in various sports so I thought that I was perfectly healthy until my phycology class in college. We learned about the same topic of strengthening the brain. I learned that a certain part of the brain develops through sleep up to the age of 25 and if we lack sleep we don’t strengthen our brain. I was lucky enough to have a phycology class to help inform me with the importance of strengthen the brain and change my habits. Since college I’ve been sleeping more and I’ve seen a tremendous change, I’m more concentrated and my brain can now develop. Your essay topic can help a lot of teenagers in to second think about the personal health of developing their brains.

To begin, the reason I am giving feedback on this abstract article is because it is a complete new field of information that I have never explored and learned about before. Therefore it is always interesting to discover something new and to expand the knowledge you have about different topics. First of all, during the reading of the article, I am led to believe that these are reasonable arguments, however what are these positive effects compared to? What are these negative aspects that the positive aspects overweigh? Besides this point, I believe insightful information has been provided and the right level of vocabulary is used to allow the readers to get an extensive understanding on the topic. In addition, based on my personal perspective on this topic, the interpretation I inquire after reading this abstract post is that if it is more positive for the environment because it is emission-free, as well as having more energy given out with less resource needed and the health of the population is not effected what so ever, then why haven’t we been using this resource? This information is hard to believe unless there is a comparison made between the pros and cons. Next, I have to admit that u have never really thought about this topic, and how we get our energy from because I didn’t believe it was necessary to understand, however through this article if it is emphasized that there should be at least a base of information then it will in fact push people to try and understand more and to go and research a little bit more about the topic. For example, as you may want to include to your essay, I just researched that Quebec uses hydro-energy to provide electricity to many homes, however that it is not as “green” as most of the population may believe. This can help you work towards the explanation that you want to provide that will strengthen your argument. http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2010/08/20/as_quebec_bathes_in_electr...

I liked this subject because it is something that I am already interested in. You have good examples to explain your topic and I think it is going to be very interesting, I agree with you that we need to take care of our skin because it is an important part of your body and it feels good when you have a beautiful skin. People have also tendency to be shyer when they have pimples or other injury like scars on their face because it is the first part of the body we see. In this case the tips you are going to give can maybe be useful for those persons. You will also connect mental disorders effect due to premature skin aging, which is very interesting because we do not know much about it. I think that if you include facts about people who experienced skin problem it would had more value to your paper. People could also relate what you are talking about to real situations. As I found in the linked article, there is many skin problems we do not know about, it will be interesting to know more about certain one. It will also be attractive if you include different perspectives of people’s point of view about skin.

The subject you discuss in your essay abstract is very interesting. In fact, people do not know very much about the treatment that mental ill persons can be provided with, and less people know that this ones can very depending on the level of illness. Your thesis is well elaborated and your premises are clear and I like that you specify the degree of illness for which each kind of therapy is better. However, I think you could add some information on the pros and cons of each kind of therapy for the category of person it targets. That way, not only could you explore more in depth each of your arguments but also you would have tangible cases or academic support on what you are saying.
Personally, I have a friend that has been diagnosed with mental illness five years ago. She went to see a psychiatrist that looked for the most adequate treatment that could suit her problem. I think that having specific treatment for every degree of mental illness could help patients as my friend to get the help they need. As seen in the article below, there are different kind of specific therapy. For example, people going through psychotherapy can either go through individual, group or family therapies. These kind of therapy can be even more helpful person depending on their personality.

I really agree with your position! It is interesting how you will organize your paper because you will cover all the aspects of concussion in sports. They are so dangerous today, especially for people who play professional sports. Hockey players are always at risks of end up with a broken leg or arm. It is a touchy subject because most of the people watch sports at T.V or pay costly tickets for games to see fights and violence. However, I am not sure what your thesis statement is. I think you should include it in your introduction. For your body paragraph, it would be cool if you provide a case study, like a person who has been injured young and have a disease related to this injuries. It is also very important to recognize a concussion and you should develop more about it maybe. Your arguments are not so well defined I think, so maybe you can really separate your paragraph so readers will not be confuse. In the other hand, I like the fact that you will talk about solutions. According to me, you should allow a paragraph for solutions but I don’t know how your outline is built so… Despite the absent thesis statement, you are doing a great job.

My point of view come from the fact that I don’t know much about concussions and injuries in sport! I should say I am not really an athlete, I don’t play hard sports such as hockey or football but I have friends who play and I am extremely sensitive when they injured themselves badly because of fights or accidents. I am also a peaceful person, I don’t like violence so I would tempt to say that we should eliminate contacts in sports… I am not aware of all different impacts a minor injury can have in long-term and it is really cool that you have deepen the subject and find solutions too. It is important that athletes, particularly young persons, are aware of the risks and be careful and preventive to avoid a future disease. In the Centers for disease control and prevention’s website, I have read that a concussion can change the athlete’s behavior, which is a huge effect. Breaking a little bone in your head could change how you feel, think, and behave. In conclusion, I think your research paper will be useful to athletes or just people who play sports.

I am interested by your subject because I am also doing my research about health. We often hear about how the consumption of alcohol during pregnancy is bad, but less about the other factors. It is a good thing that you warn us about the issue. Maybe you could have explore some different health factors influencing pregnancy and the baby like nutrition or physical activity. The three factors you develop, alcohol, drugs and smoking, are similar. In general, your writing is good and easy to understand.
On my personal perspective, my future desire of becoming a mother makes me feel concerned by the subject. In a couple of years from now, I consider having children and when the time will come for me to get pregnant, I hope I will be informed enough to do everything I can for my baby’s well-being. I agree with you that negligence of future mothers during pregnancy can affect the whole life of their child. Some women are maybe not well informed about how their behavior can be dangerous to their baby.
Here’s an article based on a study published in the European Journal of Clinical Nutrition that talks about how a bad nutrition, especially a high consumption of fat, during pregnancy can predispose babies to diabetes.
