In this course, Modern Languges students learn about the cultures that are related to the languges they study, by viewing and discussing foreign language films.  The Newsactivist site is intended to allow for a collaborative platform where students can discuss specific topics related to the various films they view in class. This online site also facilitate the virtual collaboration with students of the University of Potsdam, Germany who are enrolled in a course with Prof. A. Knoth, titled, "Changing Welfare. The film shows average life, it does not pretend to have blockbuster-type script. I find many things disturbing and unexpected in the movie but at the same time towards the end of the movie many connections seem to be made and the movie is making sense

In his movie, Andreas Drensen shows us the lives of two women, Katrin and Nike.  For Katrin, every day is a new challenge, she is looking for a job; trying to get some money for her son and trying get rid of her alchoolic behaviour.   Nike is young, ambitious and a big hearted person. She is taking care of elders and trying to treat them very well , respecting their wills and joking with them. She is helping her friend to get money by selling pictures.

While I was watching the movie, I was wondering if it was hard to move up in the social classes in germany, especially, when you born in a lower social class. Because it seems like Katrin have some trouble finding a good by takeitcheap">job.

In the movie Sommer vorm Balkon, director Andreas Dresen attempts to depict the reality of the lower class lifestyle in Berlin, East Germany. What really touched me was that the elderly are badly treated by their relatives. For example, the old lady who Nike reads to is probably just lonely and her daughter is mad because it`s not what she pays Nike to do. I understand that when one doesn`t have a lot of money it`s difficult to think that you`re paying someone just to read out loud; but it`s more than that and there are other ways of dealing with it.

I don't understand why Katrin doesn't just stop drinking. She has a kid which she should take care of and she should show him the right example. If I was a mother, I wouldn't want my kid to see drunk in the morning. I would want to be a mother who wakes up before them to prepare breakfast and not coming home in the morning half drunk with my kid taking care of me. I feel like her son shows more maturity than her.

What are your impressions and interpretations of the relationship between Kartin and Niki?  Do you think that if you where at their place you will act the same way or not?

Is Katrin jealous of Ronald ? Because Niki seems like she don't care anymore about her and Katrin don't really like this situation .... She feels like Ronald took her place.

The movie “Summer in Berlin” is very good in making the views empathies with the characters. These are situations the common person can encounter in their life. Loneliness, divorce, rejection, unemployment, and alcohol abuse are all very common problems. The actors are very good especially when it comes to showing the pain and reality of the lower class. This movie makes me reflect on different classes in society and societal structures.

Once Sommer vorm Balkon was released to the public, what was the general response from those who had seen it? Did it begin any controversies, say, based on how the lower class was portrayed, for example.

The movie Summer in Berling by Andreas Drensen, depicts the hardships that the average everyday man and woman experiences throughout life. Director Drensen shows this by using the style of realism in his filming.  By doing so, he captures the ugly truths about life that people go through, and the hurtful emotions that go with it. The movie is a bit raw when it comes to depicecting certain scenes; not something you would want to show to your adolesants. Over all, the movie is a bit sad but, good when it comes to showing reality.

Since Katrin and Nike are not homosexuals, how could they substitute the need for a man's love by kissing their friend (a woman)?   Since Nike does many things in order to please her boyfriend Ronald but that se doesn't like, why doesn't she affirm herself so that they can both be happy? Is she afraid to lose him if she doesn't always please him?

Andreas Dresden's movie, Summer in Berlin, attempted to depict life as realistically as possible. However, most of the characters he presents lead sad lives and, until where we watched, there seemed to be little improvement in all of these lives. According to Newton's law of universal gravitation, "everything that falls eventually rises", so is it really plausible that nothing positive would happen to all these people?

It seems that everyone in this movie has a small job.. or just don't have any. They don't have careers. I have heard that in Germany, you have to be young to get a job, but also that if you miss school you get a fine?

I thought that even though the movie depicted reality, it depicted a very positive side of reality. For example, Katrin gets over her drinking problem relatively easily and is reunited with her son quickly. Their relationship does not seem to have suffered any damage, and although her relationship with Nike is put to the test, it does not fall apart either. Nike is able to free herself of Ronald, and the life of the two friends goes back to normalcy and peace.
