2015 Earth Day Global Conversation

About this class

Participants in the 2015 Global Conversation, an event organized by Minneapolis Community and Technical College, can join this class to continue to discuss issues broached on Earth Day 2015.

Videos of the days conversations will be shared here and students who participated in the conversation will be able to have conversations around environmental issues while other students from within the newsactivist network who may not have attended the conversations can also share in the conversation.

There are many challenges that we face in our 21st century if we want to have a sustainable world –a more peaceful and justice world for ourselves and future generations all across the world.   How we think about and value and treat our Earth -our Environment -is a crucial component for addressing all the major challenges we currently face both locally and worldwide.   At the heart of all major global challenges  (food, water, air, energy, resources,  poverty…..) is the environment and the changes now upon us all  from Climate Change.   No one country alone can “save” our planet from our “modern” world.  Global Education and Global Communication & Relationships are essential.   The key to a better world needs countries to come together and work together to address Environment and Climate Change issues.   This can happen only if the peoples from different cultures and walks of life come together as global citizens who see a common interest.   We must do this within our own country as well as with peoples in other countries of the world.  As college educators at MCTC we want to offer our students more opportunities to meet and learn from students who live outside of the U.S. --in other countries and regions of our planet.

The MCTC Earth Day Global Conversations Program is our first attempt to use our technology to give our students opportunities to meet and converse with students outside of the U.S.

The article UN: Climate plans must go further to prevent dangerous warming by BBC News highlights a recent assessment by the UN on the national climate plans put forth by its member states. These plans, called Intended Nationally Determined Contributions (INDCs), are expected to be a major building block in the formation of a new climate change treaty at the upcoming United Nations Climate Change Conference in Paris. The UN says that these plans cover about 86% of global emissions, which is a significant increase from the amount covered by the Kyoto Protocol in 2005.

Due to recent economic downfall in regards to Canada’s mild recession, companies are beginning to feel the heat of investing so much money into Alberta’s oil sands. The price of gas has fallen dramatically over the past year and the oil sand companies have begun to push back project start dates and goals. When a company invests in the oil sands, it is based on a 40-year time frame and, therefore, the companies have to wait out the low times such as this in order to benefit in the future.

Scientists are sending out a plea for the oceans. The global climate change that humans have been contributing to has started the threat of mass extinction in the oceans. Heating of the oceans causes the acidity to rise which in turn forces ocean wildlife to either migrate to new areas or to try to adapt to the change in environment. 40% of coral reefs have died due to human action and climate change. Massive bottom trawlers scrape away the seabed, tearing apart coral reefs and upturning tons of debris. Today, over 460000 m2 is used for oil mining in the deep ocean.

The way how the war journalism subject is present in the introduction is great, it caught my attention. The subject is divided in four complete section and they respect their title. The content is well explained and we clearly understand the difficulties in the process of war journalism. A small conclusion to resume the main points and to add an opening will be a great end to this article.

Hi Zoe, I just read your article and I have to congratulate for a text of this quality! First of all, your subject is very well explained. There's some difficult terms and realities that needed to be explain and you did it efficiently. You also kept an interesting style of writing, all along your article! On the other hand, I understand that some people not familiar with the news world can find difficult to understand some parts of your text. Maybe with a longer description, you could turn on some lights.

Hi, I very like your choice of subject! It is something not discussed frequently, but very important to our society. I would like a little more explanatiosns about the requierements to become social worker. Your conclusion, just like your steps, are representative of the position. You did a great job because there's a lot of thing I didn't know before reading your text.

Your text was really easy to understand, On the other hand, i think it would have been clearer if it was more structured. Beside that, you did a great job and i love that you put a picture!

I think that your text is really well-structured. It was easy to understand but it would have been easier for me to understand if you had explained the term: Anchorman. What is it? Instead of that, good job, and i'm loving the fact that you post a picture with your text, it is a plus!

Good article! Your sentences are good constructed and even if you did not exlpain the terms that might be hard to understand for a non-expert, I think that a non-expert can understand the principle of how making a publicity. However, I think it would have be a good idea to separate the steps in different paragraphs. It would have help to readers to define each steps more easily. Overall, with defined steps in different paragraphs, your article is really helpful to someone who wants to understand the process of creating a publicity.

Great article! I like how you divised your text in four clear paragraphs, it helped me to understand more easily the idea of each paragraphs. Nevertheless, your article would have been more attractive with a picture. I think that if you add a picture, this article would be perfect!

Good text! It clearly explain how to make an online marketing strategy. However, I think I would have prefer a step by step structure. It would have help the readers to easily understand each steps. Otherwise, your text is simple and I would definitely recommand it to someone who needs help to make an online marketing strategy.

Good article. The procedures were well explained and were easily understandable for non-scientific readers. However, the conclusion seems to be not completed. Beside that great work.

Good article, the method has been well defined and explained. However, it would have been interesting to have a more open conclusion. But generally, it is a well written article.
