Recently, I read an article about the increase of the death rate caused by opioids in the United States. Experts consider this phenomenon as a crisis that is mostly due to the use of heroin and fentanyl. Fentanyl is a synthetic drug mostly made in China that is 30 to 40 times more powerful than heroin. This drug is not meant for human consumption but for pain reliever on big animals and this is why it causes so many death. When people consume those drugs, the most of the time, they are not aware that fentanyl is added because narcotrafiquants add this synthetic product in theirs to increase the effect. So, using it can lead to their death more easily. For example, there were more opioids related deaths than motor vehicle accidents and gun violence in 2015. According to Dr. Nora Volkow, director of the National Institutes of Health’s National institute on Drug Abuse, the addiction problem came out of the health care system because opioid medicine were used to threat chronic pain that reach more than 100 million Americans. Use of prescription drugs can also lead to overdose. For example, from 1999 to 2014, 165 000 people died because of this reason even if it is legal. Equally, those types of drugs become less effective with the time so it requires always and always more drugs to get the same level of euphoria than before and it can become dangerous. This is why researches are made to develop new opioid-free drugs. This epidemic can also touch kids who can be born with those drugs in their system that can also lead to an overdose and to death. An important thing for the future would be to make Naltrexone, that can reverse opioid effects, accessible to more people like an EpiPen.
Personally, I found this text very interesting because when we say that drugs, that people takes voluntarily, kills more people than gun violence there is an issue. I also think to solve this problem we need to talk more about it to be able to found solutions or manners to prevent. I found very sad that children that has nothing to do with this issue die because of the carelessness of their parents. I found the article very complete with all the information needed present and well presented. Also, with pertinent statistics that shows the problem is there we are able to understand better the gravity of the issue. Finally, this complete text shows that drugs, even legal one's are careful things to handle.
