The benefit to studying law as a social science is to have a proper understanding of how laws work within social context, as well as how the law is viewed within the greater society. Law shapes the way that we go about our daily lives. It is important to study law as a social science in order to know what Canadian laws are, as well as how these laws can affect your life. Some laws will personally affect your life. An example of a law that will personally effect Canadians is how crime is punished. When a person commits a crime they are fairly certain of how they will be punished. It is important to know how a crime will be punished because it acts as a deterrent from committing the crime. Also there are laws that will affect Canadian community’s and society. An example of a law that will effect Canadian society and the local community is the electoral process. Who is elected into parliament will affect everyone, directly and indirectly. The policies that will be passed have the potential to negatively affect everyone. It is important to study law as a social science because if certain laws are past chaos will ensue. We can predict the future based on past laws that have been passed by parliament. This is a way that we can ensure that we are not making the same mistakes that have been made in the past. In the past laws have been passed that have negatively affected Canadian society. An example of a law that has been passed in Canadian history that has had negative effects on society is bill c-51. This is a law that will create chaos within Canadian society if it is not dismantled. This law has the potential to do more harm than good. This law will be denying Canadians their fundamental right of being a Canadian citizen. This is why it is so important to study law as a social science to understand how people will react to certain laws based on past laws in Canadian history. We should approach the study of law as an academic field by fully understanding the laws and how they can be interpreted by judges and community members. It is important to know not only what the laws are, but also the different ways that the laws can be argued in the court of law. A lawyer’s job is to not fight the specific law, but to challenge the way the law is interpreted. This is an important aspect of the law system to understand. If we understand how lawyers challenge the interpretations of the law we can better understand how to approach the study of law as an academic field.
